Clupea at the Figgjo Flint Museum

For some reason we left our cameras in the car when we went to into the Figgjo Flint store and museum last spring, but we did take this photo of the Clupea display with our cell phone.  ...guess we'll just have to go back!

Figgjo Clupea Soup Tureen

We have a few pieces of Clupea, including this soup tureen that we got for a steal.  The designer was Turi Gramstad Oliver.  Angela inspired this post - thanks! :)

New Window Stuff

We finally put the finishing touches on our kitchen window by adding a shelf and valance.  The forged iron shelf brackets are from etsy (ArtisansoftheAnvil) and I sewed the valance from some of the 20 yards of fabric that I found at a Scandinavian warehouse sale.  The shelf has some of our Scandianvian pottery - a Figgjo Clupea soup tureen, Figgjo tea set in the Astrid pattern, Stavangerflint teapot in the Flamingo Bambus pattern, and the Stavangerflint Norrøna coffee set.  I cut and installed the glass tiles on the wall (only one wall has tile up to the ceiling - the others are cabinet-height).

Figgjo Flint - Small Saga Dish

A small square dish with a fiddle player (a hardingfele?).  The back is marked with the Figgjo logo, Norsk Design, and Saga, and has the number 2169 impressed in the clay.  It also has a hole for wire so it can be hung on a wall, as many of these pieces do.

Flor og Fjære dishes by Figgjo Flint

This past May we went to Flor og Fjære on the island of Sør-Hilde near Stavanger.  They have a restaurant and gardens where they can grow palm trees and other tropical plants because of the warm Gulf Stream and the topography of the island.  Their dinner pattern at the restaurant, featuring a colorful palm tree design, was made by Figgjo Flint.

Figgjo Flint Saga Bowl

My partner is in love with the Saga line, and it has become a collecting obsession. The outside of this large bowl has a repeating design of two ladies and flowers, while the inside rim has a stylized leaf/flower border. There is a great deal of variation in the Saga line, from different figures, flowers, and colors - I assume the line evolved over the years, but I don't know the years that can be attributed to the various styles. The Figgjo Flint factory and store in Figgjo, Norway had a book on the company history that we sadly didn't buy....

Turi-Design Lotte Set

The Lotte pattern, designed by Turi Gramstad Oliver, is another line that features fantastic 1960s images.  Whenever I see these, I think of the opening credits of old British sitcom "Good Neighbors" (or "The Good Life" as it was called in the UK) - they're not actually that similar, but for some reason they're just linked in my memory.  Turi started at Figgjo in 1960, but I don't know when this pattern was introduced.  We visited the Figgjo AS factory and shop this past spring, and they had a book on the history of the company.  We didn't buy it because it was in Norwegian, but I'm kicking myself now... I guess we'll just have to go back.

This is a salt and pepper set with a tray and small jam (syltetøy) jar.  The marks on the salt and pepper shakers simply say "Made in Norway," but the tray and jar have the full Figgjo mark with the name of the pattern, handpainted silkscreen, and turi-design.

Mons og Mille

One recent eBay find was a set of six Mons og Mille trivet plaques by Figgjo Flint of Norway, designed by Turi Gramstad Oliver.  Here are two of them.  I tried an online translator for Mons og Mille (although I knew "og" meant "and") - and it means Mons and Mille.  So there you go.

The backs all have the identical mark.  I like that even the marks on the back look like they were designed by Turi.

Saga

This is a small ewer by Figgjo Flint in the Saga pattern.  I believe the artist may have been Turi Gramstad Oliver.

The base is marked with the Figgjo logo, Norway, Saga, Norsk Design, and Handpainted Silkscreen.

Figgjo Turi Vase

Most of the Stavangerflint and Figgjo Flint pieces I find are utilitarian - dishes, serving pieces, etc. They did produce purely decorative pieces as well, though, such as this small vase. It is marked Turi, Figgjo, Norway on the bottom.

One of the artists at Figgjo was Turi Gramstad Oliver; I don't know if this is her work, or simply named after her. I would assume it is hers - maybe someone can let me know.

I grew up with a few pieces of Figgjo Flint ceramics that my parents and grandma had, but it wasn't until going to the factory store and small museum in Figgjo, Norway this year that the Saga pattern really made an impact (and current collecting obsession).

Figgjo merged with Stavangerflint in 1968.
