I haven't seen this peaceful, relaxed viking with a flower on any other pieces before, and also didn't know that they made a snack set in this pattern. We also have another snack set with the same plate and mug shapes, but a design by Anne Lofthus.
In addition to the mini-coupes and bigger coupes (on the left), today the post delivered sets of wine and water goblets (right). Or red and white wine glasses... Although they might occasionally hold cocktails, too!

The Romantica line was designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1963 and produced until 1972. It came in 4, 6, 8, 15, 17, and 25 cl sizes. [Those equal about 1.4, 2, 2.7, 5, 5.7, and 8.5 ounces. In addition to the stemmed glasses, the line also included stemless old-fashioneds.]
This is the Marski pattern designed by Tapio Wirkkala. They're very similar to the Romantica, but shorter, and the stem is thicker. They're sort of the Romantica's burlier brother. They were in production from 1959 to 1980, but some online research shows they may have had a limited reproduction period around 2000 - those had the Iittala mark etched onto the glass (the foot, probably), while these vintage ones are unmarked.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Norsemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09641878947163756741noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-858790093040251675.post-46164569760552321482012-11-18T20:00:00.001-06:002012-11-18T20:00:15.650-06:00VikingWe found this little Viking yesterday. They were designed in 1963 by Tapio Wirkkala and manufactured from 1963-1972. We have two sizes now - this one is about 4 inches across and holds about 5 ounces; we also have smaller ones that hold about 3 ounces. This might be one of my favorite Iittala designs!
We finally finished installing a shelf above the windows in our kitchen eating area, and hung the rest of the scando goat fabric as a valance. In addition to the Figgjo Saga pieces here, there is an old Stavangerflint pitcher with some peacock-like birds. Outside the photo are our Dansk teak ice buckets and some coffee sets from Figgjo, Dansk and Stavangerflint. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Norsemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09641878947163756741noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-858790093040251675.post-15126010586020795202012-07-14T09:48:00.001-05:002012-07-14T09:49:30.087-05:00Odin and TorWe just got the Odin - now we just need Frøya! These are carved by Henning of Norway. The Tor is older and has a much rougher carving style, which I like. The base of it is marked with two stamps that read "Carved by hand in Norway". The newer Odin is marked "Henning Carved by hand in Norway".
He doesn't have the OS signature on the bottom, but we're pretty sure it's also by Otto Sveen. Otto's brother Anton was also a wood carver, but we don't think this is one of his.
He looks like he would be a bobble-head, but the head is fixed to the base. A few quick googles showed that Stogo made a lot of dish ware in the 1960s. The bottom is marked with the company name an Denmark.
You put loose tea in the mesh "shelf" and tilt the cup towards it to brew the tea; then you tilt it the other way to stop the brewing and drink. It actually works great! And it's a fun, stylish, and practical design - it has it all.
I saw that Iittala came out with a coupe a while back and, combined with our new cocktail book, it was finally time to get them.
Designed by Kari Christensen and part of the Tenera line, and from the late 1960s. I have seen other examples of this vase with the Aluminia mark on the bottom, but this has the Royal Copenhagen mark, so I assume it's a bit later production.Norsemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09641878947163756741noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-858790093040251675.post-32468115755423028442012-02-18T11:04:00.000-06:002012-02-18T11:04:34.915-06:00Bargain Polka

This just arrived from Tokyo via eBay - always a relief when something arrives in one piece after a long journey! My mom has had one of these thermal carafe's for years, and this year she gave one to us for Christmas! It's produced by Stelton of Denmark, and the designer is Erik Magnussen. It has such a simple design, but with great little details, like the curve of the handle. And the stopper on the top is perfect - no turning to figure out if it's open or not. It has a counterweight, so that as soon as you pour, it opens.
